The Ultimate Guide to The Wave

Discover the Most Magical Place on Earth!

Few places on Earth spark the imagination quite like The Wave. Hidden within the remote desert wilderness of Coyote Buttes North, this surreal landscape of flowing sandstone, sculpted by time, wind, and water, feels less like a hike and more like stepping onto another planet. For travelers seeking an unforgettable, crowd-free adventure in the American Southwest, a guided Wave Tour offers not just access, but depth, context, and the chance to unlock far more than the famous formation itself.

This long-form guide is designed to give you a complete picture of what makes a Wave tour special—from the notoriously competitive permit lottery to the benefits of private guiding, crowd avoidance, and the rare opportunity to explore the many hidden geological wonders that surround The Wave.

    What Is The Wave?

The Wave is a striking sandstone formation located in Coyote Buttes North, a protected area managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on the Arizona–Utah border. Known for its undulating lines, vibrant reds, yellows, and creams, and smooth, wave-like curves, it is widely regarded as one of the most visually stunning hikes in the world.

Unlike many famous landmarks, The Wave is not accessible via a road, boardwalk, or casual stroll. Reaching it requires a moderate to strenuous backcountry hike, careful navigation, and a permit system specifically designed to protect this fragile environment.

    What About the Wave Lottery?

How to Get a Permit to Hike The Wave – A Complete Guide

One of the most frequently asked questions about your Wave Tour is: How do I actually get a permit for The Wave? Because access to Coyote Buttes North is strictly limited, understanding the permit process isn’t just useful — it’s essential.

    🎟️ Why Permits Exist

The Wave is located in a fragile, undeveloped wilderness area where only 64 people total are allowed in each day — 48 through the advanced lottery and 16 through the daily lottery — to protect the landscape and preserve the experience for all visitors.

📅 Two Ways to Get In: Advanced & Daily Lotteries

There are two official ways to obtain a permit to hike The Wave. Both are conducted through Recreation.gov, the federal platform that manages public land permits across the U.S.

🗓️ Advanced Lottery — Plan Months Ahead

The Advanced Lottery is your best bet for securing a permit if you’re planning ahead. It opens exactly four months before the month you want to hike, and you have the entire month to enter.

    How it works:

    • You choose up to three possible dates for your hike in one application.

    • The lottery runs on the first day of the following month (e.g., apply January 1–31 for a May hike).

    • Recreation.gov notifies winners by email, and you have a window to accept and pay the permit fee.

    • Permits are then mailed to you about 4–6 weeks before your trip date.

    Important rules:

    • Only 48 people or 12 groups are selected per day for advanced lottery permits.

    • Everyone in your group (including infants) must be included.

    • Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable.

    📍 Daily Lottery — Your Last-Minute Chance

If you weren’t successful in the advanced lottery or didn’t enter, you can still try your luck at the Daily Lottery — but this one has a catch.

The Daily Lottery is geofence-based, meaning you must be physically within a designated geographic area around the Vermilion Cliffs (including towns like Kanab, Page, Big Water & Fredonia) on the day you apply. That’s why this lottery is often called the geofenced daily lottery.

    The multi-day Daily Lottery timeline:

    1. Day 1:
Between 6 AM and 6 PM local time, you apply for the Daily Lottery on Recreation.gov via the mobile app or browser — only if your phone confirms you’re within the geofence. Desktop/laptop browsers are not accepted for this step.

    2. Evening of Day 1:
Results are emailed later that day (typically around 7:15 PM). Make sure you check spam folders and have good cell service during this period.

    3. Morning of Day 2:
If you win, you must accept and pay the permit fee by 8 AM local time the following morning.

    4. Permit Pickup & Safety Briefing:
You pick up your permit and attend a mandatory safety orientation at a designated location (often in Page, AZ or Kanab, UT) around 8:30 AM local time. After this briefing, your permit is valid for the next day — your actual hike day.

⚠️ Remember: The Daily Lottery really takes three days from application to hiking day — application, briefing, then hike.

🎯 Tips & Tricks to Maximize Your Chances

Because these lotteries are competitive, many visitors try strategic approaches to improve their odds. Here’s what experienced Wave hopefuls and travel guides recommend:

📌 1. Apply Every Month You Can

For the Advanced Lottery, entering every month increases cumulative chances over time. Nearly everyone who wins has applied multiple times before succeeding.

    📌 2. Choose Multiple Dates

When entering the Advanced Lottery, use all three date options your application allows — this gives you three chances instead of one.

📌 3. Go During the "off" Season

Spring and fall are peak competitive months. Winter months like December through February often have fewer applicants, which can make the odds slightly better.

📌 4. Stay Inside the Geofence for Daily Lottery

If you’re trying the Daily Lottery, base yourself in a town like Kanab or Page for multiple days so you can apply repeatedly while within the geofence.

📌 5. Use a Mobile Device for Daily Entry

Make sure your phone’s location services are enabled and you’re within the designated boundaries before you attempt to apply — Recreation.gov will check your GPS location.

    📌 6. Monitor Emails Closely

Daily Lottery notifications come in the evening and you only have a short window to claim and pay the permit fee the next morning. Check your email immediately after applying.

    🧠 Final Permit Realities

Despite all strategies, luck still plays a big role — and even experienced adventurers can go years without winning. But persistence, smart planning, and knowing exactly how the system works can dramatically improve your odds and your ability to actually use the permit when you get it.

Why a Guided Wave Tour Changes Everything

When you book a private Wave tour with an authorized outfitter, you’re not just getting a guide—you’re dramatically increasing the value of your permit day. While guides do not bypass the lottery system, they ensure that when you do win or secure a permit, you maximize every moment in Coyote Buttes North.

    Guided tours:

    • Eliminate navigation stress in an unmarked wilderness
    • Ensure full compliance with BLM rules
    • Enhance safety in extreme desert conditions
    • Unlock access to multiple iconic formations beyond The Wave

    Crowd Avoidance by Design

One of the most remarkable aspects of a Wave tour is the absence of crowds. Even at its daily maximum, Coyote Buttes North never feels busy. Visitors are naturally spread out across miles of terrain, and guided tours often time routes strategically to avoid overlapping with other hikers.

    For travelers who want:

    • Silence
    • Solitude
    • Uninterrupted photography
    • A deeply personal experience

…The Wave stands apart from heavily trafficked destinations like Antelope Canyon or Horseshoe Bend.

More Than Just The Wave: Unlocking the Hidden Sites

While The Wave is the headline attraction, Coyote Buttes North is packed with extraordinary formations that many unguided hikers miss entirely. A private guided tour opens the door to a much richer experience.

*Depending on conditions, timing, and group ability, additional sites may include:

    The Second Wave

A lesser-known but equally photogenic formation featuring sweeping lines and bold colors—often quieter than the main Wave.

    The Sand Cove

A vast bowl of sculpted sandstone, offering incredible scale and texture with very few visitors.

    Melody Arch

A delicate sandstone arch hidden within the folds of the buttes, accessible with experienced route-finding.

    The Boneyard

A field of fractured sandstone slabs, scattered like fossils across the desert floor—an absolute dream for photographers.

    Top Rock Arch

A dramatic arch perched high above the surrounding terrain, offering sweeping views and a true sense of discovery.

These locations are not marked, signed, or obvious. Knowing where they are—and how to reach them responsibly—makes all the difference.

*While it is our goal to maximize your day in the permit area, adding these extra sites is not guaranteed, as some of them require moderate climbing/scrambling and may not be suitable for all groups. We will factor time, skill level, and weather conditions to determine safety and feasability of these extra attractions.

The Value of a Private Wave Tour

A private Wave tour transforms the hike from a simple destination-based outing into a fully curated desert experience. Rather than following a rigid itinerary, your guide adapts the day around your interests, pace, and photography goals.

    Private tours are ideal for:

    • Couples
    • Families
    • Small groups
    • Serious photographers
    • Travelers seeking flexibility and exclusivity

    Benefits include:

    • Custom pacing and route selection
    • Personalized interpretation of geology and history
    • Strategic timing for lighting and photography
    • The ability to linger at special locations

Expert Navigation in a Route-Free Wilderness

There is no official trail to The Wave. Navigation requires reading the landscape, recognizing subtle landmarks, and understanding how weather and light alter the terrain.

    A knowledgeable guide ensures:

    • Efficient route-finding
    • Reduced risk of getting lost
    • Safe decision-making in changing conditions
    • Confidence in both outbound and return navigation

In summer heat or winter conditions, this expertise becomes even more critical.

    Photography at The Wave

The Wave is one of the most photographed locations in the Southwest, yet no two visits ever look the same. Light, clouds, shadows, and seasonality transform the colors and textures hour by hour.

    Guides help photographers:

    • Time arrivals for optimal light
    • Avoid harsh contrast when possible
    • Discover unique angles away from the most common shots
    • Reach lesser-known formations for portfolio-worthy images

Whether you’re shooting with a phone or a professional camera, the opportunities are extraordinary.

    Physical Requirements and Preparation

The hike to The Wave is approximately 6–7 miles round trip across sandy washes, slickrock, and uneven terrain. While not technical, it does require:

    • Good physical conditioning
    • Comfort hiking in desert environments
    • Proper footwear and attire
    • Proper hydration and nutrition

A guided tour includes pre-hike planning advice to ensure you’re fully prepared for the conditions.

Why The Wave Is a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

Many destinations impress. Few transform. The combination of limited access, raw wilderness, artistic geology, and profound quiet makes The Wave something truly rare.

    For travelers who value:

    • Authentic adventure
    • Crowd avoidance
    • Meaningful exploration
    • Exclusive access to protected landscapes

…a private Wave tour in Coyote Buttes North stands as one of the finest experiences in the American Southwest.

Pairing The Wave with Other Page, AZ Adventures

One of the greatest advantages of hiking The Wave is that it fits seamlessly into a broader Page, AZ adventure itinerary. Pairing your Wave permit day with guided experiences before or after allows you to see a wide range of iconic Southwest landscapes—without overloading any single day or sacrificing solitude.

Because The Wave is limited-access and inherently uncrowded, it serves as a perfect anchor experience around which to build a thoughtful, crowd‑avoidance‑focused itinerary.

    Alstrom Point (Lake Powell Overlook)

For those seeking remote beauty and unforgettable views, Alstrom Point is a natural extension of the Wave experience. This high overlook above Lake Powell delivers sweeping panoramas, solitude, and a true sense of backcountry exploration—ideal for travelers who value scenic isolation over crowds.

    White Rock Hoodoos

The White Rock Hoodoos offer a completely different geological experience from The Wave, featuring towering white formations set in a quiet, rarely visited landscape. This hike is especially appealing to guests who loved the solitude of Coyote Buttes North and want to continue exploring places that feel untouched and otherworldly.

    Skylight Arch

Hidden within the Glen Canyon National Recreation area, Skylight Arch is a striking natural arch that rewards those willing to venture beyond the obvious. Its remote setting make it a favorite among photographers and adventurers looking to discover lesser‑known landmarks.

    Coyote Buttes South (CBS)

For visitors who don’t secure a Wave permit—or who want to expand their exploration—Coyote Buttes South is an exceptional alternative or add‑on. With fewer visitors, equally stunning formations, and a more flexible permit system, CBS delivers the same sense of discovery and solitude that defines the Wave experience, often with even fewer people.

    Building a Complete, Crowd‑Avoidance Itinerary

When combined thoughtfully, these experiences create a well‑rounded Southwest journey that balances:

    • Iconic landmarks
    • Remote wilderness
    • Geological variety
    • Strategic crowd avoidance

Pairing The Wave with these guided tours allows you to experience the very best of Page, AZ and the Vermilion Cliffs region—without ever feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
